All This & Heaven Too

starring: Bette Davis, Charles Boyer, Jeffrey Lynn, Barbara O'Neil, Virginia Weidler
directed by: Anatole Litvak

September 01, 1998
Most books are better than their film renditions, with a few exceptions. I personally enjoy the movie based upon Rachel Field's "All This and Heaven, Too" more than I ever liked the original novel. Not that the book is dull; it is based upon a true event. Rachel's great uncle married the infamous Henriette Deluzy-Desportes. Mademoiselle Deluzy was accused of complicity in a murder which rocked France and ignited the Revolution of 1848. After her release from the Conciergerie she fled to America where she married the Protestant minister Mr. Field.

The film, however, brings all the characters and their vying passions to life far better than does the novel. Charles Boyer wavers on the brink of insanity as the honorable but tormented ... Read More:

I Remember Mama (1948)

starring: Irene Dunne, Barbara Bel Geddes, Oskar Homolka, Philip Dorn, Cedric Hardwicke
directed by: George Stevens

January 05, 1998
I finally got around to watching this movie after knowing about it for some time and coming close to watching it once. I found it thoroughly delightful with just the right amount of sentimentality, not overly mushy. Being a book lover and especially of English literature, I particularly enjoyed the references to some of my favorite books. While the film obviously centers around the mother (played wonderfully by Irene Dunn in a role like no other I've ever seen her in) I think tribute should also be made to the somewhat silent yet strong role the father played. I particularly liked the way he offered coffee to the daughter when she so obviously had "grown up" (as well as the look on his face when the mother doused with cream) and the "smoking" lesson he ... Nun's Story (1959)

starring: Audrey Hepburn, Peter Finch, Edith Evans, Peggy Ashcroft, Dean Jagger
directed by: Fred Zinnemann

September 01, 1998
This was one of Audrey's finest performance. She was moving, believable and heart touching. She is the finest actress to ever hit the big screen.

Secret Beyond the Door

starring: Joan Bennett, Michael Redgrave, Anne Revere, Barbara O'Neil, Natalie Schafer
directed by: Fritz Lang

July 26, 1990
Universal Pictures presents "SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR" (1948) --- (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe Hollywood crime dramas that set their protagonists in a world perceived as inherently corrupt and unsympathetic...Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s...Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography, while many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression...the term film noir (French for "black film"), first applied to ... Tower of London (1939)

starring: Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, Barbara O'Neil, Ian Hunter, Vincent Price
directed by: Rowland V. Lee

September 16, 1997
When that martyr to morality, that paragon of piety Sir Thomas More had his head chopped off by the order of his master, Henry VIII, it's unlikely in those last moments that he asked forgiveness for the sliming of Richard III's reputation, which he accomplished while ambitiously working to curry favor with the Tudors. Richard was the last of the Yorkist line, a capable and honest king, as ruthless in politics as everyone else was at that time, and most likely, if he had not taken action, to lose his own head to the machinations of the Woodvilles, the family of Queen Elizabeth, widow of Edward IV, Richard's brother, and mother to the two young princes who were the immediate heirs to the throne when Edward died. We know that Richard took control of the princes, that ... Read More:

Stella Dallas

starring: Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, Barbara O'Neil, Alan Hale
directed by: King Vidor

January 31, 1995
The mom (Barbara Stanwyck) is a tacky, tastless woman, but loves her little daughter so very much that she makes what I consider to be the ultimate sacrafice. I won't ruin the end for you by saying what she does, but it is one of my favorite old movies.

Don't bother with the re-make, which I believe was done in the 90's sometime. It's a terrible dissapointment.
