The Hound of the Baskervilles

starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Richard Greene, Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill
directed by: Sidney Lanfield

March 10, 1993
The Hound of the Baskervilles is the classic Sherlock Holmes story.

the number one Holmes's story in fact.

and this is the classic version of the story.

there have been many other versions.
but this will allways be the best of the lot.

with the other versions I will say this..
-Hound (Hammer) Peter Cushing.
Cushing makes a good Holmes. but this has the usual Hammer stupid plot lines. the spider scean for example
-Hound (Brett)
this seemed a rather tired and dull presentation. Brett himself did not seem very interested in it. he did not have the same fire as when he started out.
-Hound (Roxburough)
I very much disliked this version. to showy and to much ... Read More:

Public Enemy

starring: James Cagney, Jean Harlow, Edward Woods, Joan Blondell, Donald Cook
directed by: William A. Wellman

May 19, 1998
***** 1931. Directed by William A. Wellman. The screenplay earned an Academy award nomination. During the prohibition, Tom Powers and Matt Doyle become part of the Paddy Ryan gang and enjoy the mobster life. For a while. Cagney, Harlow and Blondell are great in this film any movie lover should own. At least, two scenes of THE PUBLIC ENEMY are already part of history: the grapefruit squeezed over the face of James Cagney's girl-friend and the final apparition of Cagney more spectacular than any movie of THE MUMMY serie. Masterpiece.

Smilin Through (1932)

starring: Norma Shearer, Fredric March, Leslie Howard, O.P. Heggie, Ralph Forbes
directed by: Sidney Franklin

March 07, 1994
this is one of my very favorite movies! The whole cast is wonderful! Since everyone has already raved about Norma and Frederick's performances, I'm going to rave about Leslie's. There is a scene, in the flashback, where we see the night before the fatal wedding. John and Moonyean sneak away and have a lighthearted, romantic conversation. The dialogue may sound corny coming out of someone else's mouths ( "wouldnt it be wonderful if every time I opened my eyes, you were there?" or "after tonight, there'll be no more partings, no more goodbyes, will there my sweet?") but coming from Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer's mouths, we dont cringe. In fact, we all sincerely go "AW!" he is so adorable in that scene, that when Moonyean is shot, and he is holding her and we ... Read More:

Supernatural

starring: Carole Lombard, Randolph Scott, Alan Dinehart, Vivienne Osborne, H.B. Warner
directed by: Victor Halperin

September 12, 1995
All about séances and spirit revenge, and not nearly as bad as it could've been. Spititualist Alan Dinehart will do anything to get his hands on Carole Lombard's money, including murder. Vivienne Osborne plays a woman about to be executed (she's called the "Greenwich Village murderess"), and she allows H.B. Warner, a doctor who believes a dead criminal's spirit can enter another's body and continue its criminal ways, to experiment on her after her execution. Osborne's spirit enters Lombard's body, and having taken over Osborne's personality, Lombard is able to expose and get revenge on the murdering and scheming Dinehart. Some of the special effects are pretty crude (it's 1933, don't forget) and the spiritualism stuff is fairly hokey, but Carole Lombard is exciting ... Read More:

Night Must Fall (1937)

starring: Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, Dame May Whitty, Alan Marshal, Merle Tottenham
directed by: Richard Thorpe

September 10, 1996
I was not a big Robert Montgomery fan in spite of my love for old movies - UNTIL I saw this film on Turner Classic Movies about 3 years ago. After seeing him in tux and tails being an idle rich socialite in a dozen movies, Mr. Montgomery really showed his range of talent here. He was rewarded with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for this role. With his charisma and bad-boy good looks, he makes Ted Bundy look like Winnie The Pooh! His hip-hop swagger and confidence made it irresistible for Rosalind Russell to want a bit of "thug love" in her previously uneventful existence. Montgomery's "Danny" showed up that you can never let your guard down because even the nicest next door neighbor can be a homicidal maniac. Dame May Whitty got caught up because she was a despicable ... Read More:

starring: Shirley Temple, Richard Greene, Anita Louise, Ian Hunter, Cesar Romero
directed by: Walter Lang, William A. Seiter

The Little PrincessAs a kid I would watch this movie over and over again on VHS. It has been about 21 years since I saw it and I am thoroughly impressed with the masterful acting and song in this movie. Child actors today don't have the acting talent or musical ability of Shirley Temple.

Inspiration

starring: Greta Garbo, Robert Montgomery, Lewis Stone, Marjorie Rambeau, Judith Vosselli
directed by: Clarence Brown

March 07, 1994
Of all of Garbo's movies I've seen to date, this film may be the one with the "weakest" plot, but her presence & allure are worth the watch. For example, although "Anna Christie" (another early '30s) was a more "static" early talkie, nevertheless, I think "Anna..." is a better film (especially the german version).

Notwithstanding, she makes a good couple with a young Robert Montgomery-you believe they're in love- and she gets to wear some very beautiful Adrian designed outfits as Yvonne "The Toast of Paris". Good acting by Lewis Stone, Karen Morley and Marjorie Rambeau.

If you are a Garbo fan you have to give it a try, but if aren't and you want to watch her at her very best, watch "Camille", "Queen Christina", "Grand Hotel", "Anna Karenina", "Ninotchka"... even "Mata ... Read More:
