Childrens Toyshop VHS : The Boondock Saints
.

The Boondock Saints

starring: James Binkley, Matthew Chaffee, Billy Connolly, Bill Craig (III), Willem Dafoe

January 29, 2002
I'd rather eat cold pork gravy with a hair in it than sit though this thing again. This is the only DVD that I owned that actually ran though my shredder after watching it. Some films are so bad their good. This waste of time is so bad it's bad. If the Sopranos and Death Wish films were first cousins and they decided to have a baby, this film is the red haired, bucktooth freckled faced spawn that this union would bring - and this kid won't shut up.

This is a headache inducing ride through the mind of someone that obviously experienced some sort of Junior High School "that's cool session" he never got over. What a load this morality play is - an inch deep and an inch wide.

Charles Bukowski once said after reading "War ... Read More:

Pocahontas (Disney)

starring: Mel Gibson, Linda Hunt, Christian Bale, Irene Bedard, Judy Kuhn
directed by: Eric Goldberg, Mike Gabriel

I always liked this movie, but it seemed over-edited, like there was too much missing. It turns out there was, and with this 10th Anniversary DVD release, Disney finally fixed those problems with storyline and emotional impact, notably with the inclusion of the duet "If I Never Knew You." I hadn't seen this movie since the VHS release, which didn't look good: the bright colors bled into each other on tape. Apparently, the earlier DVD release wasn't that great, either. But THIS release shows just how gorgeous this film really is: the colors are simply amazing, and the widescreen shows how striking the background art is (the design for the forest scenes reminds me of "Sleeping Beauty," with a lot of vertical/horizontal contrast used.)

Secret Policeman's Ball

starring: Paul Abrahams, Rowan Atkinson, Chris Beetles, Mike Brearley, Eleanor Bron
directed by: Roger Graef

October 20, 1998
A brilliant set of sketches performed by the best of British comedians, and musicians. Several of the routines have provided quotations that have entered the comic lexicon [and not just in our family]: "Will the wind be so mighty, as to lay low the mountains of the earth?" (Rowan Atkinson and Peter Cook), "Interviewer" (Atkinson and John Cleese), "Wensleydale? Oh no, that's my name" (Cleese and Michael Palin). And the live performances of the songs (by Pete Townshend, Phil Collins, and Sting) are terrific. A tragedy that Rhino hasn't released it on DVD yet, but I remain hopeful.

Mrs Brown (1997)

starring: Judi Dench, Billy Connolly, Geoffrey Palmer, Antony Sher, Gerard Butler
directed by: John Madden

April 06, 1999
Prince Albert is dead and Queen Victoria (Dench) is inconsolable). The servants don't know what to do. No one can get her out of her mourning.

Because her husband was so fond of him, Victoria sends for John Brown (Billy Connolly), a Scotsman who was one of her husband's attendants. Being a stubborn Scot, he doesn't take 'no' for an answer and waits out in the courtyard until Her Majesty finally decides to go out on a pony ride. Gradually, they develop a friendship--or is it more? That's a question asked by historians and fans of the royal family throughout the years.

Meanwhile, there's a political struggle going on. The Prime Minister (Antony Sher) wants the Queen back in the reins. Bertie, the Prince of wales, (David Westhead) ... Read More:

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

directed by: Brad Silberling

There is a reason for the $1.6 New-price. Shallow characters are well played by the cast, but it does not add-up to much. Evil repeatedly wins over innocence in a sort of repetitious theme. Bad, bad stuff...

Secret Policeman's Other Ball

starring: Rowan Atkinson, Jeff Beck, Alan Bennett, John Bird, Tim Brooke-Taylor
directed by: Julien Temple, Roger Graef

June 08, 1999
If this film footage had the same music as the original album, it would be worth $100, but it doesn't even come close. I bought the album, on its first release when it came out. The Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton collaboration is worth more then the rest of the whole show, if it were the same as on the LP. But it's not, I know, somewhere out there, someone has this footage on film. If they had any respect for great filmed music, they would re-release it, the entire show and give the proceeds to Amnesty International. It would definitely make a bundle, including some from me. And, by the way, the copies of this VHS I have are the MGM/UA originals and they only have 1 out of the 3 songs that Beck and Clapton played together.
