While not overly frightening the strength of this movie is in its story and the fine acting performances by Bruce Davison and Ernest Borgnine. In this version, Willard is a sympathetic character. He's not the cardboard cut-out totally evil serial killer we've gotten used to in horror films.

Willard is a lonely guy who befriends some rats and is driven to using them as a tool for revenge. Although the rat attack scenes will make your skin crawl they are not as graphic as most horror films today. This movie's punch is ... Read More:

This is the same edition that came out in 2004; it does not contain any new features. I looked on Criterion's website, and apparently the only thing "new" about this edition is the lower retail price. Still a great movie, so if you don't own it yet, now you can get it for less money. Very cool feature-length making-of documentary included.

This film shows some of the true problems that face people who fall on hard times. The mother in the family dies leaving extensive medical bills which plunge the family into poverty. The father is too proud to ask anyone for help including a doctor who is the father of his daughter's friend. This movie is fraught with drama and emotion. It tore my heart out when I watched it. It shows that not everyone who is poor becomes that way because they are lazy.

Last Summer

starring: Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas, Catherine Burns, Bruce Davison
directed by: Frank Perry

Three teens vacationing with their parents on Fire Island during the late 1960's forge a bond out of friendship, sexual longing and boredom. The catalyst for this bond is Sandy, a beautiful bikini clad 16 year old who is discovered by Peter and Dan as she attempts to rescue a seagull that has swallowed a fishing line. When Rhoda, a pudgy, straight-laced girl enters the threesome, she becomes the incorruptible moral conscience of the group, and a threat to Sandy's dominance over the two boys. The resulting conflict brings into question the ability of logic and reason to counter the primal power of carnal desire. In an environment free from moral or physical constraints, human beings, if left to their own devices, will digress to their baser natures. Last Summer is a film that grabs ... Read More:

Apt Pupil

starring: Ian McKellen, Brad Renfro, Joshua Jackson, Mickey Cottrell, Michael Reid MacKay
directed by: Bryan Singer

I loved Stephen King's Different Seasons, except for one thing. I always thought that the story APT PUPIL was about fifty pages too long. The film version takes care of this concern, distilling PUPIL down to it's basic elements: old evil passing itself on to a young, all too eager student. Ian McKellen (yep, Gandolf himself!) is perfectly, quietly malevolent as the ancient nazi war criminal, hiding out in suburbia. Brad Renfro plays Todd Bowden, the normal-looking high school kid, concealing a darkness that appears to be insatiable and without limits. Todd fools his family, friends, and guidance counselor (David Schwimmer), into believing he is just another highly gifted teenager. In reality, he is a sociopathic wretch, coasting along by gaining the misplaced trust of others. Studying the holocaust ... Read More:

Strawberry Statement

directed by: Stuart Hagmann

The movie goes back to the "good old days" of 1968 when protest against the war and student uprising was at the forefront of the news. I lived through that era and can feel the spirit. It details the student takeover of a university in a believable way and the brutal suppression of that takeover. Although I use the term "brutal" it was probably the only way to restore peace at the school since the authorities were too permissive early on and allowed it to grow. It does resonate with some of our current problems concerning the "war" and suddenly becomes timely. It's set against a tender love story and the casting can only be characterized as brilliant. The lead characters win our hearts. It brought back a lot of fond memories.
