Men Don't Leave

starring: Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Arliss Howard, Joan Cusack, Chris O'Donnell
directed by: Paul Brickman

July 31, 1998
This film is an overlooked masterpiece. Jessica lange, Joan Cusack, and Chris O'Donnell(in his film debut) are excellent, as is the entire film. It's very well acted, written, directed, and musically scored. Another screen gem languishing in the vault unreleased, to the detriment of audiences all over the world who are missing out on such a wonderful film. You'd think Warner Bros. would want to release it and make money, why they haven't is beyond me. They need to this year already, we've waited long enough. I'm so sick of going to Best Buy and seeing such putrid selections of lame films available on dvd knowing this film, as well as "Resurrection" w/ Elloen Burstyn, Sam Shepard, and Richard Farnsworth, are not able to be purchased on dvd. It's ... Read More:

Streetcar Named Desire (1995)

starring: Jessica Lange, Alec Baldwin, John Goodman, Diane Lane, Frederick Coffin
directed by: Glenn Jordan

May 14, 1996
I bought this tape due to the rave reviews it received and because I loved the original and also loved the remake with Treat Williams and Ann Margaret. I thought with an exceptional cast, such as this one that this film couldn't miss. I'll probably be lynched because I am the only one here to give it a poor review. I am an enormous fan of Alec Baldwin and have never been able to find fault with his performance in anything he has ever done, until I saw this movie. Today he would be a better, stronger, more believable Stanley Kowalski than he was at the height of his beauty, though at this point in time, his age would not fit the character. Much as I like Jessica Lange, at one point I had to turn off the movie because I simply couldn't listen to her ... Read More:

Sweet Dreams (1985)

starring: Jessica Lange, Ed Harris, Ann Wedgeworth, David Clennon, James Staley
directed by: Karel Reisz

December 29, 1998
When Hilda Hensely (Patsy's mother) saw this movie she said, "I saw it once. That was enough for me."
Hollywood took all the dramatic liberties and artistic license it could in the making of this movie. Jessica Lange's performance is one of her best but her watching her lip-synch while Cline's real voice was heard on the Soundtrack is distracting as their voices are entirely different. Lange tends to overdo it on the lip-syching and one can tell she is doing it. Not good. No disrespect to Lange but they should have hired an actress who could sing....like Sissy Spacek who sang all of Loretta Lynn's songs on "Coal Miner's Daughter."
Ed Harris plays Charlie Dick well enough but is extremely unlikeable. It is inacurrate at all counts to ... Read More:

Country

starring: Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard, Wilford Brimley, Matt Clark, Theresa Graham
directed by: Richard Pearce

July 25, 1989
This should be part of American history courses. The acting is incredible - no surprise given the actors. Incredibly realistic, I was teary thinking about how this very thing happened to my family, and so many other neighbors, too. And the music. I wish the soundtrack was still available.

Rob Roy (1995)

starring: Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt, Tim Roth, Eric Stoltz
directed by: Michael Caton-Jones

January 09, 2001
Rob Roy is an absolutely splendid, swashbuckling tale full of villainy, beautiful lasses and strapping lads. It ends with a sword-fight so thrilling Roger Ebert writes the filmmakers "re-invent the exercise".

Liam Neeson brings 1700s Scottish legend Rob Roy MacGregor to life in a performance that makes the hero seem ten feet tall, bulletproof, and passionately human. His performance would be reason enough to watch this movie, but the rest of the film is fleshed out with supporting characters that are as rip-roaringly full of life as The Man himself - both friends and foe - so when the climactic sword fight comes we are gripped in the moment. It feels as if the world hangs in the balance.

Jessica Lange plays Mrs. MacGregor as a sexy, supportive ... Read More:

Music Box

starring: Jessica Lange, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Frederic Forrest, Donald Moffat, Lukas Haas
directed by: Costa-Gavras

December 14, 1993
A lawyer (Jessica Lange) defends her father against charges that he is a Nazi war criminal and in the process learns more about his past than she would care to know.

If you've seen "The Jagged Edge", then you really don't need to see "The Music Box". Both films were written by Joe Eszterhas and he essentially uses the same plot for both. In both cases a lawyer is defending someone whom she is emotionally involved with and in both cases Eszterhas keeps spinning the story so that we are never certain as to whether the client is guilty or innocent. Both are very good films (although "The Jagged Edge" has the better ending) and I highly recommend that you see at least one of them, it's just that if you've seen one, the other isn't going to provide any new insights.

King Kong (1976)

starring: Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, Jessica Lange, John Randolph, Rene Auberjonois
directed by: John Guillermin

July 02, 1996
I'm not a big fan of King Kong, but I have seen all three films: 1933, 1976, and 2005. The original 1933 film is a classic in its own right. The 2005 remake could've been better, but it had its moments. And right in the middle, the first 1976 remake is a love-or-hate motion picture. There are no dinosaurs, no chewing on natives, and no famous T-rex fight, which makes it a bit less exciting. Unlike the others, which are set in 1933, this one is set in the 70's. It's filled with politics, environmental issues, industrial strife, etc. And it has more of that than it has action.

But I don't mind the 70's politics. I like this film for what it is. Jeff Bridges gives an adequate performance, while Charles Grodin does seem to overact sometimes. Jessica Lange is a bit irritating ... Read More:

Night & The City (1992)

starring: Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange, Cliff Gorman, Alan King, Jack Warden
directed by: Irwin Winkler

January 01, 1998
This is a remake of Night and the City (1950) directed by Jules Dissan, who was blacklisted by Hollywood because of actions by the House Un-American Activities Committee, and for that reason is dedicated to Dissan who had to continue his career in Europe. The original film starred Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney, Francis L. Sullivan and Herbert Lom. I haven't seen that film, but I understand that it is very good.

This film from 1992 is not bad; however for some reason its reputation isn't much. The voters at IMDb give it a rather tepid 5.7 stars out of 10 while giving the original 8 out of 10. I'm not sure why, but I think it has to do with:

(1) Robert De Niro playing a non-heroic character. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with his acting. He is outstanding ... Read More:

Far North (1988)

starring: Jessica Lange, Charles Durning, Tess Harper, Donald Moffat, Ann Wedgeworth
directed by: Sam Shepard

April 06, 1999
What a debacle!!! This film directorial debut by Award winning playwright/actor Sam Shepard is a shameful waste of time and talent.

During the full moon cycle in The North Woods off of Lake Superior a family reunites when the patriarch,Bertram (Charles Durning) is thrown from his horse,Mel. Katie (Jessica Lange) comes from "the big city",pregnant and unwed to her father's side. He asks her to shoot the horse.......and it just plummets downhill rapidly after that!

This was the most unpleasant and painful 88 minutes that I have spent with a film in a long time. This film is essentially about the bizarre folk of Northern Minnesota who descend from the wild ancestor mongol hordes. The women have gone wild. They do not need men and have survived in spite of them. The men have ... Read More:
