If you're looking for a Book turned into a movie--this is it but in a very obscure fashion. This movie takes the stereotypes that Long writes about in his short novel and basically flips them around here. Here you have the American man, but it is he that is hopelessly inlove with the Asian "woman" (using that term lightly). She is the one that is full of decite and ends up betraying him. At the end, he has to realize that he, not only was abdoned and betrayed, but it was by a man. This movie had great twists and turns and also and was definetly an attention keeper.

The stories are timeless and still relevant, even though one takes place in 1954, one in 1974, and the last in 2000. It is a similar format to "If These Walls Could Talk 2" in which there are three stories from three different generations. The 1954 sequence hits home, in spite of a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy within the armed services, because even now, a military career can still be irreparably damaged if a soldier or officer is outed. Gay youths can relate to the 1974 story, seeing minimal progress from 1974 to the present with the way GLBT young people are treated by their peers. All one has to do is watch "The Matthew Shepard Story" or "Boys Don't Cry" to witness recent cruelty against GLBT youth.
The three stories could have easily been ... Read More:

The film paints the story of two actors, from their first encounter at school in the Twenties through their success as stars of the Peking Opera, difficulties during the Japanese occupation, the Communist takeover in 1949 and the traumas of the Cultural Revolution in the Sixties...
For the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, the film touches new ground on two fronts... In the first place, though it does not avoid from acknowledging the sufferings under the old regime, it takes an embittered view of Communist society and of the Cultural Revolution specifically...
The two friends, Xiaolou and Dieyi, adopt a young man, Xiao Si, who becomes one of the Red Guards and quickly informs the political sins of his benefactors... ... Read More:

I find it hard to believe that anyone could watch this movie and not be moved by this powerful story. The heartbreaking part of it being that it's based off true events. Brandon was clearly suffering from some identity issues and she had run into some close calls before hooking up with this group of *friends*. Hilary Swank definitely earned her Oscar with this production. Great movie.

Anjolina Jolie did a wonderful job with this role however the writers took a lot of liberties with Gia's life. Everyone makes her mom seem like the bad guy but Gia's issues ran deeper than the lack of her mother's love like the writers want the public to believe. Gia was most likely bipolar which little was done for or known about in the 80's. Gia was a truly beautiful woman but I would wager that she thought and felt as though she were a man. Today we have a label for what I think she was and that is Transgendered. If she were born in the 80's, she would most likely be alive today with medication and a better understanding of who she really is.

Love Triumps in this story of two men in turn-of-the-century England. Despite their great differences - one is of noble birth, the other is from the lowly worker class - they find comfort and confidence in each other and a love that, in the end, wins out against the hurtles and hard choices a victorian-age society puts between them... A MUST BUY!

I purchased this for my husband. He is a man of eclectic taste, and Hedwig is one of his favorite pass-times. I can't say that Hedwig is one of mine, but to each his own. Hedwig is an almost transgender, there is a botched operation. There is also a lot of music, which is humorous and entertaining. Its funny, not clean fun, but funny.
