I like all genres of games. The only things I don't like are the scum of the genre (I mean the REALLY bad stuff). Universe at War doesn't fall into the category of the scum or the highlights of each genre like Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Halo, and Unreal Tournament. To stand out today, a game needs originality, an interesting plot (if any), and a trully unique gameplay expirence. Universe at War has none of these.
On the the review...
Graphics. This game doesn't have much in the way of graphics, only some nice effects, yet the walkers (big machines thingies, example: the thing on the cover) are nicely detailed. But this game does run fairly well.

As a kid I was more into the shoot-em up type of games but my kid is just a notch above me intellectually. And he really loves the game. While it is true that it can slow your computer dramatically, my advice is to buy memory. We pumped the system to 1.5GB and the game seems to buffer the data quite well diminishing the disk access delays. Now we run full graphics with good performance.
And I should add we scratched the CD and Microsoft had a very good customer service.
I'd call AoE III a fun & safe choice.

This is an awesome set. Love the civilization series, and here they all are. Was shipped to me quickly and have enjoyed it ever since.

After reading some of the positive reviews, I just had to write. While I think the overall mechanics of the game are sound, I got board with this game. There are only 2 or 3 scenarios where you're doing any switching. Otherwise, you're taking a load from point A to point B. The big excitement? Watching your speed.
This would have been a great game had it included more scenarios with switching operations. I don't have the time nor do I want to learn how to be a developer and write my own scenarios.
This reminds me of a carnival game where you pay XX amount for the first prize, which isn't much. You keep paying and paying to get a bigger prize. In this case, your paying money to other developers to provide more game enrichment.

No free 30 days without handing over credit card first, and they don't accept Discover. I'm not giving a company my ATM card that seems to think they can trick 14 bucks out of my pocket... what are they a porn site? Let people sign up, then force them to start playing on paying basis. Sorry, game looks great but crappy account management means I immediately uninstalled it, giving it to a friend. Maybe they'll give it a good review, this seriously pissed me off.

If truth be told, being a huge fan of the original Dungeon Siege, I was more eager to play SPACE SIEGE than any other game this summer. Hyped as the next creation of Chris Taylor and Gas Powered Games (both of DS fame), this was supposed to be the space age answer to the upcoming Diablo III. Well, all hell broke loose, that's for sure...
The story is tissue thin but this would not have been a real problem (after all, DS with its "simple peasant rising to the challenge to save the land" story was hardly...Shakespeare), if the game were to give immersion a chance. It does not. One never forgets that he is playing a video game. And the moment he might be caught in the action, the awkward controls will bring him back. I haven't seen such bad camera placement and panning ... Read More:

This game is not an improvement over the previous edition. I would not recommend buying this.
Reasons why it sucks:
-The graphics aren't that great.
-You can only see a small area of the playing field at once.
-You have to build up civilizations over time, you can't take full advantage of their attributes immediately.
-I hate the card system, it's lame.
-You can't double-click to select all the units of one type in an area.
-No real improvements over the last game, just different. As in crappier.
